JWANENG: Leeroy Poulter won this year’s 1000 Desert race as team Toyota maintained its dominance in the annual event. He beats last year’s winner, Anthony Taylor and Conrad Rautenbach, both from Team Toyota who finished second and third respectively in the race.

Poulter was winning the race for the first time despite boasting an incredible curriculum vitae in motorsport. He is currently the defending South African cross country racing champion. He finished fifth in this year’s  Dakar race.

He could not hide his excitement yesterday following the victory, but mentioned that there were some challenges along the way during the race which kicked off on Saturday morning.  “It was very difficult today (Sunday) compared to yesterday.  The road was very difficult, but I am happy I managed to win. I am winning it for the first time. Last year I finished first on the first day, but had challenges on the second day so I am happy with my achievement this time around,” Poulter said after the race.
