When presenting his ministry’s budget proposal to Parliament on Tuesday, Mabeo said that the 14 projects comprise eight major projects and six access roads below 30 kilometres.

He said that the six access roads include Thalamabele-Mosu road (28km); Moshupa-Manyana road (17km); Thamaga-Kubung (22km) and Goodhope–Kgoro-Gathwane road (12km), Radisele–Pilikwe (23km) and Modipane–Mabalane (24km).

Mabeo stated that some of the eight major projects have been designed and are ready for construction while other designs are being reviewed. He said that the long-awaited design and construction of the 109km road between Charleshill and Ncojane road has finally been awarded to Zac Construction (Pty) Ltd for a period of 36 months. He also mentioned that the design review of Mohembo Bridge across the Okavango River has been completed and pre contract for

construction has commenced.

Mabeo told Parliament that his ministry is developing the National Multi-Modal Transport Master Plan and the Greater Gaborone Transport Master Plan to improve sector management and facilitate transport integration with land use and other productive sectors.

“This will be the blueprint in guiding us to have an efficient, cost effective and safer integrated transport system.

The projects and programmes to be identified by this study will lead to economic diversification,” he said.

He stated that the studies for the National Multi-Modal Transport Master Plan and the Greater Gaborone Transport Master Plan will both be concluded in 2016.

Meanwhile, Parliament approved the proposed budget for the Ministry of Transport and Communications of P2,022,398,190 for recurrent budget and P1,315,359,000 as development budget for the financial year 2016-2017.
