BFA mulls taking women’s games to Ftown

After declaring Francistown the home of the Zebras, The Botswana Football Association (BFA) is keen to take the senior women’s games to the second city too. “We have been rotating the games between Molepolole, Gaborone and Lobatse stadiums.

We want to emulate our male counterparts and take the games to Francistown, the support that side is marvelous and that is the kind of support we need for this team,” said BFA executive member, Susan Montsho.

Montsho was speaking at a press briefing ahead of the women’s team assignment against Mauritius in the first leg of the Senior Women Africa Championships at the Lobatse Sports Complex tomorrow.

Meanwhile the women’s team coach, Gaolethoo ‘Ronaldo’ Nkutlwisang expressed her confidence in the team which has been in camp since mid-January.

“This group of players has been playing together for a long time now. They know each other very well.

The preparations have been going well, we will be going for a positive result. Looking at the commitment the players have shown, results are not in doubt,” she said.

Nkutlwisang said they have played three friendly games prior to tomorrow’s game. The team won 2-1 against Police XI Under-17 side and lost 8-0 and 5-0 to UB Hawks.

“I can’t worry much,” she said. “The fitness level was a worrying factor at first, but after these three games I am confident that it is where it should be.”

Mauritius would be playing their first-ever international match and Nkutlwisang expressed concerns of facing a closed book.

She however said she would like to unsettle the visitors in the first minutes so they can play their normal game.

“Like in any level of any competition, we should

go out there and get positive results,” she said. “Yes our opponents are a team which we do not know of, but results should be produced.”

The coach said they would have liked to play an international friendly but due to financial constraints that was impossible.

Bonang Otlhagile, the team captain said: “Yes finance was an issue but the other thing was that we could not secure an opponent. We were looking for a team to play, but none was available for a friendly match.

“We are just going to apply what we have been in the training grounds. The morale is high and I have confidence in my team-mates. We will bring results on Saturday.”

The visiting side was expected to arrive in the country yesterday afternoon. The return fixture would be played in Mauritius in a fortnight. The winner of the two-legged encounter faces South Africa in the next round.
