The first delegation arrived in Gaborone yesterday (Sunday) and will be in the country until March 2,while another delegation will arrive on March 5 and leave on March 12.

Seretse made the announcement at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation offices in Gaborone on Friday. She said the American universities that were coming to explore possibilities of research and collaborating with local institutions through programme franchising, among others.

She explained that most of the universities that were sending delegations had long-term relations with the government of Botswana that had been sending huge numbers of students to them over the years.

These are Ohio University, University of Cincinnati, New Mexico University, St. Georges University, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Morgan State University, San Francisco State University, Florida Coastal School of Law, Howard University, Wester Illinois University, and Charlotte School of Law, Communications, Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics.

In response to questions from the media, Seretse said the universities were selected after looking at Botswana's skills gaps and identifying programmes that could meet these gaps.

"We currently have 350 students studying in the US," she said. "We hope their numbers will grow going forward as missions like these could help attract the universities to offer free scholarships to some of our students."

Ambassador Seretse said the hope was that the mission would also benefit Botswana's education system by recommending improvements after meeting with functionaries of the Ministry Of Education.

The Coordinator of Botswana Education Hub, Mogotsa Kewagamang, said his organisation would persuade the universities to set up joint research ventures and franchising with local institutions.

The education hub would also market Botswana to the American universities with a view to attracting American students to come and study in Botswana, Kewagamang added.
