Parliament cannot afford rental costs for Members of Parliament (MPs) to rent out private houses should the contractor refurbishing the parliamentary flats fail to beat the end of May deadline.

Members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) learnt this yesterday when they enquired how much money was spent on rental expenses for MPs.

Chief accounting officer, Barbara Dithapo, told the PAC that they expected the 25 parliamentary flats that are not completed, to be handed over by the end of May.  “We don’t have money that we can pay for MPs to rent out for three or four months to come. Our anticipation is that parliamentary flats should be completed by end of May.
