Churches Bill adopted

The controversial Societies Amendment Bill, that saw tempers flaring in Parliament in the past week was passed yesterday. This was subsequent to amendments that lowered the number of people required to register a religious organisation from the initial proposition of 250 to 150, as well as minimising penalties on illegal society members, among other alterations.

Justifying the reduction of members needed to form a religious organisation, Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Edwin Batshu said suggestions that the number was too high motivated this decision.

“The motivation is from the debate that the threshold 250 was too high, hence this reduction,” he said.
