Mmegi Online :: Dada’s hope for league title dashed by under-performing Gunners

Dada was speaking in an interview at the New Lobatse Stadium following Gunners’ one all draw with Police XI on Sunday.

The Lobatse-side was lucky to get away with a point in a game that the visitors dominated especially in the second half.

Dada is one of the business people who came to the rescue of Gunners with a cash bail out.  He and another Lobatse businessman, Choppies director, Farouk Ismail have injected a whopping P2 million into the team.

When he was speaking at their sponsorship launch earlier this year, Dada said Gunners was going to compete for the league honours following the financial boost.

However, he does not feel that they would be able to achieve this mission this season even though the team has had a good run in the league.

Since the league started, Gunners has maintained a Top 8 position.

“I don’t believe that we have the manpower to compete for the championship.  Pound for pound we can’t match the likes of Township Rollers, Gaborone United and Centre Chiefs.

“But we can compete,” said Dada who has been associated with Extension Gunners since the 1980s.

“If we can acquire clinical finishers, maybe we can have a good second

round,” he said. Dada said they cannot acquire players that they want because they have contractual commitments with their teams.

The Gunners official said his team is still in a building process.

“There is a difference to where we come from and where we are today,” he said.      In order to bolster their squad to compete for the league title, Gunners signed players like Jomo Moatlhaping, Topo Piet and Isaac Paye amongst others this season.

While the team has been doing well this season compared to the past, their Achilles’ Heel has been scoring.

Gunners has been scoring an average of one goal per game which is not sufficient for any side that is eyeing the league title. However, Dada did not rule out their chances completely.

“Anything is possible,” he said, adding that Township Rollers, which is leading the log is only ahead of them by 11 points.   He said even though it is rather a tall order but Rollers can still be toppled.   Dada conceded that the 2014/15 league season has been tough.  He said there is no minor team, citing a recent game in which rookies Sankoyo Bush Bucks walloped the more experienced BMC 2-1.
