Mmegi Online :: Inhabitable teachers’ houses worry Autlwetse

Responding to the State of the Nation Address this week, Autlwetse said that most of the houses were built more than 50 years ago and have never been refurbished.

“The situation is so terrible in so many houses. It’s high time the ministry does something about teachers’ accommodation for Swaneng Hill School. The school has over 100 teachers and more than 1,700 students. I don’t think Serowe needs another senior school, but I believe renovation should be done in that school,” Autlwetse said.

He said shortage of accommodation and the inhabitable houses contribute a lot to teacher’s performances.  In addition, the school is faced with serious shortage of classrooms, the same problem other schools are experiencing, he said. Autlwetse said that it is worse in primary schools where students are still taught under trees.

 “I urge the Ministry

of Education and Skills Development to address the issue of classroom shortage because the situation becomes terrible during the rainy season when students are forced to share a classroom. This is common especially in primary schools.”

Also worrying the MP is shortage of water in the greater Serowe area, particularly villages of Gojwane, Serule, Moreomabele and Topisi where residents go for days without drinking water.

“Metsi ke nngwe ya tshwanelo ya motho, ke ka moo motho a sa tshwanelwang go a thoka (Water is a human right, hence a person should not go without).”

He further complained of lack of developments in Serowe, citing internal roads that are not tarred.

“Most of the internal roads especially in my constituency are not tarred and I hope the minister of transport will have to consider that,” Autlwetse said.
