Former MP for Mogoditshane, Patrick Masimolole of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has petitioned his loss in the general elections. The ex-assistant minister is seeking a recount after his defeat by Sedirwa Kgoroba of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC).

The other contestant in the race was Tumiso Rakgare of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP). Masimolole who succeeded Sedirwa’s father, George Kgoroba as MP has written a letter to new legislator and Rakgare notifying them about his intention. “Our client has given us instructions to move a petition seeking recounting of the ballots cast by voters in the elections of the Member of Parliament for the Mogoditshane constituency in the elections that were held on 24 October 2014,” says a letter from Masimolole’s lawyers. The letter has offered Rakgare an opportunity

to be a party to the petition if he wants. Meanwhile Kgoroba has said he has not received any letter from Masimolole’s lawyers while Rakgare stated that he has declined to sign the petition. “I don’t think I really need recount and to start with, I don’t know their agenda.  Masimolole should fight his battles alone,” Rakgare said.
