Botswana was awarded the right to host the IWG for four years in February this year. The conference was scheduled to be held on June 14 to June 17 2018 but could change due to the fact that it will clash with the World Cup. “The dates were proposed at the time of bidding but they will be revised as we realised they clash with football World Cup 2018. Proposed month is May and it is yet to be confirmed by the IWG committee in April 2015,” Mothibi said yesterday.

The conference is expected to take place at Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) with a total number of 1200 delegates expected.

Mothibi said they expect 300 delegates from Botswana, 500 from other African countries and 400 from across the globe. She said the local organising committee is already in place, headed by retired director of Gender Affairs Department, Valenciah Mogegeh. She said the hosting of the event will benefit Women and Sport Botswana (WASBO) and Botswana sport a great deal.

She said one of the benefits is increased awareness on women and sport issues for Botswana and the region. There will also be an increased participation and the need for female involvement in sport at all levels. “Other benefits are formulation and implementation of gender sensitive policies for Botswana sport as well as promotion of sport tourism.

experts in the field and representatives of key stakeholder organisations from various regions in the world. It does not have permanent body premised on any statute or permanent quarters.

It also does not have permanent custodian and its quarters change every four years on the basis of the host of the next IWG Conference. The first international conference on women and sport took place in Brighton, United Kingdom in 1994.

It was organized by the British Sports Council and supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The conference specifically addressed the issue of how to accelerate the process of change that would redress the imbalances women faced in their participation and involvement in sport.
