Leon Steinberg, 64, was found dead in his vehicle in July, with multiple wounds and blood spatter indicating that he met a violent end. He was cremated in Mahalapye shortly after.

Police subsequently posted a P25,000 reward for information leading to the capture of his killers. Yesterday, Officer Commanding for Kanye, Ruben Mphoeng, said no leads had come forth despite the reward.

“Investigations into the murder incident are ongoing.  We do not have any leads and we still appeal to members of the public to assist with any information that could solve the puzzle,” he said.

Late July, Steinberg was found on the outskirts of Lotlhakane village near Kanye and while police said they were still establishing the nature of his death, they confirmed that the body was blood-spattered with signs of assault.

“We received the report on Sunday morning and upon arriving

at the scene, we discovered the body of the deceased man covered in blood stains,” Kanye Police Station Commander, Superintendent Kealositse Konyana told Mmegi at the time. Mmegi also learnt that Steinberg had left the village with P50,000 he intended to purchase a drilling machine with.

“He managed to secure the purchase for P30,000 and informed his family that he was returning,” a close family member said at the time.

“However, he was later found deceased with only P1,800 on him.”

Steinberg’s late father, Benny, was among the small group that gathered under the now famous morula tree on February 28, 1962, to form what would later be known as the Botswana Democratic Party. The older Steinberg was appointed treasurer at the initial meeting and would later be elected substantively in the same position at the party’s first congress.
