BCA secretary, Sumod Damodar said the course is part of the association’s plan of spreading the game across the country as well as to persist in their effort to empower volunteers.

He explained that more than 30 participants from the North East district participated in the course that went smoothly according to the BCA official.

Damodar explained that the participants were drawn from Zwenshambe, Vukwi, Mapoka, Moroka and Masunga villages. He explained that BCA and Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) were implementing the move meant to see cricket spreading to villages further away from the urban set up as more volunteer coaches are responding to the clarion call.

He observed that cricket has always been seen as a minority sport codes for a certain class in the society, but that is the mindset that BCA is working hard to change.

“The motive of this orientation course is to increase participation

in cricket by volunteer coaches, help equip volunteers with basic skills to run a coaching session in cricket, promote and build positive health attributes within communities,” said Damodar.

He said the intention is also to build social networks within communities and help to create a base for a lifetime sport that can be pursued throughout one’s life as they bring fun and enjoyment of the sport.

Damodar explained that after training, volunteers would assist coaches in their surrounding communities and help to spread the game and create a wider base of talent identification.

Meanwhile, Damodar announced that the T20 cricket is scheduled to start on Sunday at the cricket oval in Gaborone.

He explained that fixtures would be released as soon as all logistics have been sorted out. T20 is a short form of cricket that lasts for three hours with each team having a single inning.
