Stage set for constitutional clash

The High Court in Gaborone will this morning hear arguments in a contentious constitutional legal brawl around the voting process for the next Vice President and Speaker of Parliament. As the sun set on the fifth day of stasis at the National Assembly yesterday, lawyers representing the major parties in the urgent legal suit were scrambling around to finalise their heads of arguments.

The Attorney General’s suit against the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), Botswana Congress Party (BCP) and the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has frozen Parliament for five days, in a historic precedent for the country.
