Press conferences a sham

Lately, there has been a trending but negative development where press conferences are concerned. Organisations call members of the press for briefings with expectations that ultimately, there will be coverage on newspapers, radio, and television. But then the key people, the media, are made to be observers as ordinary members and supporters take control.

The trend is common across all sectors such as sports, political parties and even religious organisations. Journalists would be invited to a briefing and they find a room, conference room, or even compound, with political parties in particular, packed with members of the host organisation.

This has happened with Botswana Democratic Party, Umbrella for Democratic Change, Botswana Congress Party and Botswana Football Association, to mention but a few. These are organisations that constantly interact with journalists and therefore call press briefings on a regular basis.
