Message from Kgosi Seretse to Mmegi on its first birthday

In 1985, on the first anniversary of Mmegi President Ian Khama wrote a message to the paper wishing it well. This is how the message read: A year ago, on the 31st August 1984, I sent a message to Mmegi wa Dikgang, in which I gave my opinion of how I felt a newspaper should be run and how it can contribute to developing the society it serves, through good journalism.

I have observed with pleasure that Mmegi started off with, and has succeeded in maintaining a high standard of professional journalism since its first publication. Readers need not be reminded of the many indepth articles that have appeared; they leave no doubt about the amount of investigative work that has gone into making the paper, in my opinion, the leading newspaper in Botswana for its reporting on issues that affect this country and that reviews world events and those that affect us more directly.
