National security should not be compromised

In this edition, we carry a story about a Google map of Gaborone. The greatest concern is that some of the critical places which are of security concern are in there for everyone to see.

Mmegi Online :: National security should not be compromised

We feel such places as the military base and the Office of the president, the American Embassy and any other such high security areas should not have been allowed to be published. This compromises our security. This information on the Google map can be accessed by people with ulterior motives and this could spell disaster for this country. Probably at the time the map was produced it was not yet decided that the Office of the President would relocate to Orapa House. Now that it has been confirmed, something needs to be done to rectify this problem.

Though we cannot say the military base cannot be easily accessed by outsiders, we should not be seen to be aiding those that have bad intentions towards us by exposing ourselves to that extent. We urge the powers that be to act on these matters soon rather than later.

What is also amazing is that prior to the shooting of the map, there was assurance that residential areas would be left out. This was said at press conference addressed by the Google representatives and the deputy permanent secretary in the Office of the president, Jeff Ramsay. But now these are in the Google map. If indeed the agreement was not to include residential areas, we wonder why  they are now included.

Fare thee wel

In the last week, this country has lost two of its greatest politicians. The first to depart this world was Motsamai Mpho. Some days later, Goareng Mosinyi followed. These two are among the pioneers of this great nation. Each  of them has in their own way, contributed to the development of this country. They have fought the good fight and have finished their race, In the process, they kept their faith for this country. We should proudly let them go so that they can rest.

This nation will always be proud to have had them in our midst. Mosinyi was at one point a Member of Parliament for Shoshong. On the other hand, Mpho never made it to Parliament but was selfless in his fight for the political emancipation of those in the opposition. Mpho was also a cultural activist. We take this time to wish their families well during this difficult time. May their souls rest in peace.
