Mmegi Online :: Floods cause chaos

Elsewhere in the district, Mogobane Dam was overflowing. The Officer-in-Charge at Ramotswa Border Gate, Annah Kokomane, confirmed yesterday that they closed the entry and exit point on Monday as a deluge pelted the district.

Ramotswa Border Gate lies approximately 400 metres from the Ngotwane River that forms a natural boundary between Botswana and South Africa."We are closed for business until further notice because the situation is bad," Kokomane said. "We hope we will open soon because it does not usually take long for the water level to go down."

In the meantime, travellers should use the Tlokweng Border Gate and Pioneer Border Gate in Lobatse, she said.
All rivers in the South East District - including Ngotwane, Taung, Nnywane and Potsane - were full or overflowing. Nnywane flows into Ngotwane, which in turn flows into Ngotwane Dam. Taung also flows into Ngotwane Dam.
Only Ngotwane River continues after the dam that bears its name and flows into Gaborone Dam that was only 40 percent full recently.

Several schools in Ramotswa - among them Ketshwerebothata Primary School and Kelemogile Junior Secondary School, which lie adjacent to each other between Magope and Magopane neighbourhoods - were inaccessible on Tuesday morning. After the flooding subsided, poor drainage turned the two neighbourhoods into a veritable marshland. A parent ferried several students into Ketshwerebothata in his off-road vehicle.

Several homes were similarly affected, their situation made worse by poor drainage and lack of a discharging system along newly constructed internal roads, resulting in stagnant water everywhere. The Headman of Mogobane, Kgosi Ralinki Moilwa, told Mmegi that it rained

heavily between Monday night and Tuesday night. He said Mogobane Dam is usually filled when it rains in the neighbouring villages of Molapowabojang, Kgomokasitwa, Ntlhantlhe, Lekgolobotlo and Ranaka.

Thankfully, Kgosi Moilwa said, no reports of mishaps have so far been received. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has already received cases of malaria infections due to the current rains. In a press release, the ministry warns that the country is likely to have high levels of malaria transmission due to above-normal rainfall that the country is currently experiencing. Reports of confirmed malaria cases are from some areas in Kgatleng and Kweneng East districts. The ministry warns that even though the reports are only from the named districts, the whole country is at risk of malaria infection.

"Therefore, people are advised to take all the necessary precautions to protect themselves against this deadly disease," the statement says. The public is advised to use insect repellents and to wear clothes that cover the arms and the legs, especially in the evening, and to sleep under treated mosquito nets where possible.

People must also keep their surroundings clean by cutting weeds around their houses and by disposing of objects that are likely to collect water that could encourage the breeding of mosquitoes.Holes must be filled and stagnant water around homes drained. Pregnant women living in areas with malaria are advised to take malaria preventive pills throughout their pregnancy and six weeks after delivery. Travellers from non-malaria areas to malaria areas are advised to visit the nearest health facilities for medical advice two weeks before travelling.
