The deputy director of Gender Affairs, Thapelo Phuthego has appealed to the civil society to support women seeking political office. Speaking at the on-going gender and elections workshop yesterday, Phuthego noted that the 2009 general elections produced only 12% of councillors and 7.3% of Members of Parliament.

“Women often times in their endeavour to stand for political positions, find themselves struggling alone with only their party behind them. Phuthego encouraged women to compete with men in party central committee positions even for the presidency. She, however, said Botswana has made tremendous progress in the representation of women in decision making within the Public Service.
