Inflation marginally quickens

The annual inflation rate was 4.5 percent in April 2014, an increase of 0.1 of a percentage point on the March 2014 rate of 4.4 percent. According to a statement from Statistics Botswana, annual inflation in April 2014 was lower than the 7.2 percent recorded during the same month in 2013.

The downward movement of annual inflation rate between April 2013 and April 2014 was attributed to the stable prices of commodities especially the main components of transport and food and non-alcoholic beverages, which decreased by 9.8 and 2.8 percentage points respectively. The inflation rates for regions between March and April indicated that only rural villages’ realised a surge of 0.7 of a percentage point, moving up to 5.3 from 4.6 percent, whilst cities and towns’ and urban villages’ remained unchanged at 4.4 and 4.3 percent.
