Mmegi Online :: Khama rebuffs Kwelagobe and Motswaledi?

It is said that BDP chairman, Daniel Kwelagobe and secretary general, Gomolemo Motswaledi, who led the humiliation of Khama's allies during the party elections on Monday were snubbed on Tuesday when they tried to pay the President a visit. The duo wanted to present their proposed list of the five additional members to be appointed to the Central Committee by the President. That was before Khama quickly made his appointments yesterday without considering the proposal from Kwelagobe and Motswaledi.

Khama appointed Vice-President Mompati Merafhe, Education Minister Jacob Nkate, former BDP Women's Wing chairperson, Tebelelo Seretse, lawyer Isaac Seloko and councillor Malebogo Kruger to be ordinary members of the BDP Central Committee.

Kwelagobe and Motswaledi reportedly went to Khama wielding a list of five people, which they thought the President should consider to make the Central Committee more inclusive. It said the list had Cecilia Mlazie of Barataphathi from the Chobe region. The region does not enjoy good representation in the Central Committee and her choice was meant to bridge the gap. Kwelagobe and Motswaledi wanted past immediate secretary general, Nkate and Merafhe to be included in the Central Committee to balance the factions. The two lead the Nkate-Merafhe faction or A-Team which was whitewashed in Kanye by the Kedikilwe-Kwelagobe group or Barataphathi. In the Kwelagobe-Motswaledi list, Health Minister, Lesego Motsumi was roped in to balance the factions and most importantly to represent the  South East South and South East North region, which do not currently enjoy any good representation in the Central Committee.

Ezekiel Kajuu of Barataphathi was listed to represent Kgalagadi,

another marginal area in the Central Committee representation.

Khama's snubbing of the two members of the BDP executive has raised fears that the differences between him and the Kwelagobe-Kedikilwe faction, which were visible before the Kanye congress are not likely to end soon. It is apparent that already Khama is not keen to cooperate with Kwelagobe and his allies.

Yesterday, Motswaledi declined to comment on the rebuff from the president. "It is a matter in which I can't favour your publication with a response because these things are internal matters," he said. He added that whether or not any member of the BDP executive committee wanted to meet Khama, is not a matter for the press or public.

BDP executive secretary, Dr Comma Serema said he was not aware that Motswaledi or Kwelagobe wanted to meet Khama. "I am not aware of such a proposed meeting. If at all some BDP executive members had proposed to meet Khama over any issue, then I am not informed," he said yesterday.

He said he is not aware of the list of proposed names that the two party officials wanted to present to Khama. "What I know is that Khama has issued a list of nominated members today," Serema said. The President's press secretary, Sipho Madisa told Mmegi that he was not aware of any meeting or proposal made by Kwelagobe or Motswaledi to meet his boss over any party issue. "To be honest with you, I am not aware of any such meeting and everything is news to me," he said.
