Known as the first-borns of Botswana, farmers have enjoyed a cocooned place in local policymaking and the national psyche, having pre-dated the mining boom. However, with farming contributing less than three percent to the economy annually, a new World Bank report showing it consumes about half of the country’s precious water supplies is adding fresh pressure on the first-borns.
