Nasha attacks govt over gender protocol :: Mmegi Online

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Margaret Nasha says the reasons government has advanced for not signing SADC’s Protocol on Gender and Development, are flimsy. The Protocol is a commitment by countries to provide for the empowerment of women, eliminate discrimination and achieve gender equality by encouraging and harmonising the development and implementation of gender responsive legislation, policies and programmes and projects.

Speaking yesterday at the Eminent Women’s Dialogue in Gaborone, Nasha described government’s failure to sign the Protocol in the years since its inception in 2008, as one of the persistent challenges to gender equality.

“Government’s refusal to sign the Protocol is one of the persistent challenges that have been preventing the full promotion of gender equality and promotion of women,” she said.
