The school, which opened last year with an initial intake of 1,400 students, had seven pregnancies between January and March this year.

Ten more girls fell pregnant during the second term, which runs from April to June.

Interviewed on the spate of pregnancies at the school, the Ministry of Education's (MoE) principal public relations officer, Oarabile Phefo, said the situation is disturbing.

"Even one case of pregnancy is a great concern to us. This is worrisome," Phefo said.  He added that their target is to achieve zero pregnancies. The education spokesperson further said Tutume McConnel College has 11 cases of pregnancy from the first school term to date.

Phefo did not have a conclusive report of all cases in government schools nationally, saying except for the named schools, the incidents are few.

A study that the MoESD has not published, undertaken about three years ago, revealed that most pregnancy cases occur during school holidays.

"The study found that many students fall pregnant during school holidays, and that is why we emphasise that parents should have an active role in educating children," he said.

He however noted that this does not mean that none take place during the school term.

The National Parents and Teachers Association launched in

Palapye at the Education Pitso to address such issues. Phefo said this is to strengthen parents' contribution in the education system as the associations had a lesser role in the past years.

The 2008 pastoral policy is another initiative meant to address the problem of overpopulation in schools and having a situation where the headmaster is the overall overseer of the whole school. This is a policy whereby schools are divided into houses, with a Head of House (HoH), an increased number of senior teachers and a full time senior teacher for guidance and counselling.

"This will help in that students directly consult their HoHs whenever they have problems who then report to the school head," he said.

In addition, the guidance and counselling department he said is fully fledged with a professional counsellor who provides the necessary counselling. Phefo said this is a full time position and the counsellor does not attend classes, which means they are on reach whenever students need them.

Phefo said the initiative has contributed to the reduced cases of pregnancy in schools because unlike in the past, students can now seek advise on a number of issues and understand better due to the 'house' structuring.
