In an interview with Kgolagano Pukka Entaile, the manager and Aaron Riise Motlhabani, one of the group members, blew their own horns, continuously emphasising that they are headed for greater heights.Pukka says that the name Team Distant is derived from the coming together of the group members who met through mutual friends all in favour of joining forces and becoming amongst the best of house music producers locally. "We each produce a specific genre under house music so we wanted to bring that together and fuse it into one," Pukka explained. He went on further to explain that the kind of music that they are bringing to people is different as they draw a lot of inspiration from international artists and add their own elements hence making what they do different from what is already available in the market.
"During performances we use different instruments such as the shakers, cow bells and drums and that's what identifies us as a group, it brings out each of our uniqueness," Pukka said. Pukka further said that they use various indigenous languages in their music. "Each member contributes to the making of songs, from the beats to the vocals. We respect team work both on stage and in the studio," he added.
Pukka says that they chose house music because they saw much potential for the growth of house music in Botswana and they wanted to popularise it. "We want to build our own brand and grow the house music industry because we see so much growth for it and because it's our area of specialty," he lamented. He added that the time has arrived to grow the music industry in Botswana, and for Botswana to stop leaning on South African artists for house music artists. "We see a great gap in the growth of house music as it is not yet cluttered so we aimed high," he continued.
Riise added that as a group they each look up to certain people individually and they bring the strong points of these people together to make their music. "We each have individual mentors, so we bring these together into one," he said. Team Distant released their first single Oni Korota (meaning Wa Nkolota in Sesubiya) in December last year, which was recorded at the group studios, Khawa Recordings. They set crowds ablaze during the festive season and still continue to rise to the top. Their next single is due to be released next week and a mixtape is to be released later this year. They say that they wish to work with legends of the music industry from other genres of music but with their focus being on house music. The remaining group members of Team Distant are Kgosithebe Afroszest Toto, Omphile OMP Baoki and Roy Roy-K Kasale.
