Mario is being investigated for an accident that occurred on Wednesday around 4 am. It is alleged that he was teaching a friend how to drive when the sliver Golf 4 they were using crashed into a screen wall in Block 5. The Station Traffic officer at Gaborone West, Assistant Superintendent Edwin Mothusi confirmed the incident to Mmegi.
He, however, said that they are at an early stage of their investigations and have not yet charged anyone.Mothusi said Mario told them that his friend is the one who was driving. He said they then tested her for alcohol and she was below the limit. He also confirmed that the said friend does not have a license.
"When we got the car from the scene there were no traces of alcohol in the car," said Mothusi. He emphasised that although Mario is a well-known figure, they will treat the case the same way they would
any other. Mothusi told Mmegi that at some point during the day yesterday Mario was locked in their cells as police were still helping other people who were involved in other car accidents. He said they had six other car accidents to deal with in the morning only. Mothusi could not state how old Mario's friend is.
It is unclear whether the sports presenter was released yesterday as the Mmegi team left him at the police station around 6pm. When asked for a comment Mario said he was not in a position to talk to the media.According to a source, Mario's female companion is said to be a Form Three student at one of the local schools and Mario reportedly told the police the accident occurred when the girl was sitting on his lap while he was driving causing the car to crash into the screen wall. Police investigations are continuing.
