Bantsi in BAA come back bid

The Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) holds elections tomorrow with indications that former president, Moses Bantsi, is set for a comeback. Sources close to Bantsi say he is eyeing his old post though he denies it. “That is news to me,” he told Mmegi Sport yesterday.

Bantsi and his committee were toppled through a motion of no confidence in 2011 after being accused of maladminstration. Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) had not released the names of candidates at press time yesterday but reports say that if he contests the BAA presidency, Bantsi is likely to face-off with Zambia Champi of Gaborone Runners’ Club.

By yesterday, Champi had not confirmed his bid. “I will know tomorrow (today) if I am standing or not,” he said.  Botswana athletics has been in crisis after a spate of BAA officials resigned forcing a dissolution of the entire committee.  Two of the three members who did not resign from the dissolved committee are said to be seeking re-election. One of them is former vice president, Glody Dube, who says he has been persuaded to contest by those who believe in him. He says that although he knows how turbulent it can be in the committee, he decided to give it another try. “This is not about an individual, it is about representing the interests of people,” he told Mmegi Sport.

Each of the 10 beautiful young women had supporters...
