Twenty-two-year-old Onalenna Kessy Gaopalelwe is indeed living proof that it does not matter how many times you fail but if you keep holding on to what you believe in it shall come to pass. Born and bred in Selebi-Phikwe, Gaopalelwe always considered herself as a multi-talented child who was not afraid to try new things. She excelled in her academics, played netball, danced traditional dance, sang in school choirs and also did athletics in school.

"I did not want any opportunity to pass me by and everyone called me a butterfly," she recalls with a trace of nostalgia. Her formative years were spent in Selebi-Phikwe where she did all her schooling before the bright lights of the big city beckoned and she relocated to Gaborone to pursue a course in psychology and English at the University Of Botswana (UB). The first born of three children describes her lifestyle as very normal and is quick to tell Showbiz that ever since she was a child, her dreams were always centred on being a beauty queen.

"I started grooming myself from an early age to maintain my body weight by eating healthy food and excising," she says Her modelling career began at the tender age of 10 as she believed that she had the whole package that comes with being a model and those include the body, heart, smile and the brains but the road has not been smooth as she did not win any prize or title.

The determined Gaopalelwe did not give up on her dream nor was she discouraged from entering beauty contests ever again. She entered again at 16 years of age and this time lady luck was on her side as she won her first title 'Miss Home Economics Phatsimo' in Selebi-Phikwe. Having a supportive mother also helped in boosting her self-confidence.

"My mother would always encourage me to enter beauty contests,

she is my biggest fan," she says with a smile. She was also inspired by Mpule Kwelagobe who made Botswana proud in 1999 when she won the Miss Universe titled and she hopes one day she can also makes her country proud by winning a world title too.

Gaopalelwe has eight titles to her name so far, she is the Miss H.E. Phatsimo 2006, Miss H.E. First Princess Regional, Miss Valentine Selebi-Phikwe 2008, Miss Winter Selebi-Phikwe 2009, Miss UB First Princess 2010, Miss Intervarsity First Princess 2010 and finally Miss Earth Botswana 2010 but she is not about to give up.

Her most memorable and proud moment was when she represented Botswana in Vietnam in the Miss Earth contest, even though she did not win the title she won three awards which are golf championships, as runner-up, Talent in which she got sixth position and won Miss Pool Party.

She has also dedicated her spare time to doing charitable and community work at the Cheshire Foundation, Botswana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals (BSPCA), BCL, and Beauty Eating away Cancer.Gaopalelwe also gives environmental messages at Baobab, Lapologang, Phatsimo and SPSS at times.

The most embarrassing moment on the ramp was when she tripped on her dress and nearly fell on stage during Miss UB 2010 pageant. Apart from that she has been having exciting moments in her modelling career. Besides being on stage she also helps out with judging, choreographing and hosting pageants.

"I have worked with Somarelang Tikologo, TshwaragananG (UB) and was also involved in a cancer awareness dinner with Thabang (Miss UB 2010) and Kutlo (Second Princess)," she tells Showbiz. She also offered her services as a mobiliser for Smart man for Safe Male Circumcision at UB. Despite the many obstacles that there are in this dog-eat-dog industry Gaopalelwe is determined to make her story and career an unqualified success.
