Campaign to boycott Botswana Tourism by Survival International!

Batswana listened and watched in vain to hear His Excellency President Khama respond to the challenge of tourism boycott by Survival International (SI) in his State of the Nation Address on October 4, 2013. Instead, Khama, contemptuously ignored the ominous development implicit in the boycott campaign.

Mmegi Blogs :: Campaign to boycott Botswana Tourism by Survival International!

Unbelievable! We are used to accolades from the international community: diplomats, international organizations, IMF, World Bank, Transparency International, foreign media correspondents and many others. Khama religiously prefaces his State of the Nation Addresses annually with reports of accolades showered on us. The avalanche of praises by the international community is melody to our ears. It is natural to feel flattered and gratified when genuine or even undeserved achievement is awarded one.

In the same breath it would be unnatural to stay pokerfaced and unmoved when something prickly and uncomfortable rubs against your skin. I believe Khama, the president is a normal person. For him to remain ramrod and unflinching may depict him as a uniformed soldier, in BDF military barracks, but hardly a proud ex-soldier-graduated to a suited politician in the State House!

Khama was expected to react to SI boycott of our tourism industry in the State of the Nation Address. The boycott is a declaration of war on the economy of Botswana, on Batswana themselves. For Khama, the commander-in-chief to behave like we are at peace with the international community and with ourselves when we are under siege, is to betray the security of Botswana; it is a cowardly surrender to an enemy without firing a shot ; from another angle it implies a muted treacherous deal with the enemy before mobilising the nation for the defence of the motherland; if there is anything to demonstrate lack of patriotism on the part of Khama, this is it! Patriotism is not loyalty to the ruling party but concern, love, and the courage to defend the national interest with the best weaponry at one's disposal, not to slink away and hide in anticipation of dubious defence from some fair weather friends who are always ready with bucketful of irrelevant and undeserved praise.

Mr President I think you know I agree with SI that you are persecuting Basarwa. My attitude was always that SI is right to intervene in the war that the government of Botswana is waging against Basarwa. We are a global village!

True Basarwa were always 'colonized' by pre-colonial administrations of traditional leaders (dikgosi), their ethnic freedom should have preceded the territory's independence or made a precondition of the independence! Yes, the constitution mandates their freedom along with the freedoms of every Motswana, but you Mr President with extraordinary powers to override the constitution and court decisions, frustrate this. BDP Government has been persecuting Basarwa! And she hasn't retracted the lie she told Basarwa and the international community that they were not moved from the CKGR for purposes of diamond mining in the area.

But we know, before the last truck carrying CKGR Basarwa arrived in New Xade

the new settlement, the company that had the concession for exploration of minerals in the CKGR was selling to another company, obviously to dissociate itself with the government lie. When Basarwa won their case they were penalised for winning the court case, by sealing their boreholes and directing the new company not to supply them with water. Your callousness compares only with that of American administrations who on their Cuba blockade have compelled the rest of the world without quarrel with Cuba, to fight in their corner. Mr President, you and the US government are bullies: America bullies the whole world because she has the largest economy in the world and the best-equipped army, you are bullying Basarwa because you have the power and the glory of despotism!

Mr President we are a peace-loving nation, to remind you, if you are suffering from memory lapse! And we are not an island unto ourselves. You think by disregarding SI campaign, you will win the boycott tussle. You are wrong!

The SI boycott campaign represents the progressive world view that all men are born free and must not be in chains wherever they are. Your personal stand against Gaddafi of Libya and Assad of Syria is example of this view, unless you are a hypocrite, 'a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma!' Acquaint yourself with the 'Universal Declaration of Human Rights and know you risk becoming a pariah by trying to swim against the universal tide.

Grant Basarwa  equal rights, negotiate with them where you may be at loggerheads . Resettling them anywhere, to provide them with services is a lame excuse; take services to them if you are serious. You may not be aware your uncle Tshekedi Khama as regent, more than 60 years ago took schools to Basarwa nomads out in the cattle-posts (I witnessed it)! Had it not been the intervention of World War II, TK your uncle might have succeeded.

Do you mean with all the resources, modern technology and infrastructure at your disposal, this is not feasible with your expressed 'passion' for human rights and hatred of despots and tyrants in other lands?

Mr President, stop this war, it is genocidal, unwanted by Batswana and unwinnable in a millennium! Had Batswana not been indoctrinated by cultural prejudice inherited from past dynasties, I wouldn't be addressing you on the issue but appealing to them to overthrow you in the 2014 general elections, so that the new regime sue for peace with Basarwa, SI and the world. Seeing you have entrenched yourself in power and control of resources to win all 57 seats next year, I beg you, sue for peace and end this war!
