This was once a common practice during the early years of independence when the country was still poor. However, the chairman of the Parents' Teachers Association (PTA), Elija Makwana said this is the reality that they have been faced with even in the modern era when students are exposed to computers at an early age. He revealed that the pupils have been learning in the open for sometime. He said in 2000, the Kweneng District Council hired a construction company to put up a double storey building at the school but the project was abandoned.
The PTA chairman said the contractor went away with the keys for the completed teachers' quarters claiming the council owed him. Makwana said the school does not have toilets for students and there are only 12 pit latrines for 932 students. He said the pit latrines are dilapidated and there is a fear that one day, disaster might strike. Makwana said when it is windy or raining, 160 Standard One pupils are forced to share a classroom.
Each class of 40 students would be under its own teacher. The PTA chairman said they had long requested that the school should be closed if the council does not put up structures. He said they have taken up the matter with the Vice President, Ian Khama who promised to make a follow up.
The head teacher of the school, Daisy Thathau admitted that they are faced with shortages but the PTA is dealing with the matter.
