Such honours are provided for in terms of the Botswana Honours Act of 1967 (Chap. 03:06).
The Act says the Presidential Order of Honour is defined as an honour awarded for efficient and devoted service to the Republic of Botswana.
It further defines the Presidential Order of Meritorious Service as an honour awarded to any persons for actions or services benefiting Botswana or any community organisation therein in any particular field or sphere and for any acts of courage or devotion to duty. The Presidential Certificate of Honour, on the other hand, is described as a certificate awarded for long and faithful service to Botswana.
The President awards the Honours acting with the advice of Cabinet.
