LEDUMADUMANE: Tshepo Nkonyana of Prisons women football club could not hold her tears when she was sent off in the game against Untouchable at Ledumadumane school grounds on Sunday. Nkonyana got her marching orders after accusing the referee of ignoring an Untouchable player who had fouled her.

The disgruntled Kagiso Senior Secondary student took off her jersey and threw it away as she shouted at the referee. "Motho wa nkgata ga o refe," she confronted the referee, Tshepo Rahube. Before she was sent off Nkonyana had a good game. Her coach, Joseph Loeto, condemned the behaviour saying it is not acceptable in a game of football. He said they always advice their players to behave well.

The disappointed Loeto said he did not expect that kind of behaviour from a player like Nkonyana. He said Nkonyana is a good player who can make it to the national team. However, Loeto has called on officials to be more lenient on women footballers. He said women football is new and taking harsh decisions on the players can scare them away from the game. He accused referees of being biased against his team. He said referees had a hand in the 2-0 loss inflicted on his team by Untouchable. He said all stakeholders should work together for the development of women football.

He said his team has a weakness of giving up if they concede first. He added that his players have a tendency of playing defensive football. He asserted that his players could not play according to plan because they were demoralised by the referees' decisions. He said he was going to work hard on building the players' confidence. He applauded Untouchable players and said they played as a unit.

Untouchable coach, Bonny Mametse, said his players followed instructions though they did not reach the standard he wanted. He said his midfielders did not blend well and he hopes to rectify the problem in the next games because most of his players are students who are still writing their examinations.

Both teams played a good game and attacked from the onset. However, Prisons gained the upper hand towards the end of the first half. Untouchable took advantage of the wind and Happy Monyame scored the first goal in the 42nd minute.

Topoyame Kgosiemang scored the second two minutes before recess. Prisons created many scoring opportunities in the second half but their efforts were frustrated by the ever alert defender Segomotso Selato. The 15-year-old Ledumadumane student was the bane of the visitors' strikers.

In the other games played over the weekend, defending champions Double Action walloped Real Touch 18-0 while Kanye Swallows beat Manaana 3-2. Roosters beat BMC 3-0 in a local derby in Lobatse.
