Bitter rivals meet again

Mafolofolo and Kutlwano will get another chance to renew their volleyball rivalry when they meet in the JB Sports final on December 9 at the Botswana College of Agriculture (BCA) in Sebele. Both sides proved too strong for their opponents in the preliminary games held over the weekend.

In the opening semi-final on Sunday morning, Kutlwano had a field day thumping hapless Kalavango 3-0. Mafolofolo who had been in a class of their own since Saturday, whitewashed Teletswana with the same margin. However, it was not smooth sailing and Teletswana gave them a serious scare in the last set. Once again, northern teams failed to pass muster and will have to watch the final from the sidelines.

Kutlwano coach Isaac Samuel told Mmegi Sport that they reached the final by pressurising their opponents from the onset. "We even made things easier by studying our opponents and their strong players. But I've to admit that we've a problem when it comes to setting. This is the department which we need to work on," said Samuel. Kutlwano suffered a blow when their main setter, Nekedzani Bayi was ruled out for six months after sustaining an injury. This means that Amogelang Nyambe remains the only setter. Samuel told Mmegi Sport that even when Nyambe is struggling with form, they still have to field her.

Mafolofolo coach, Kabo Ntshinogang, said he is disappointed that the games did not provide them with the kind of test they wanted. "Teletswana were no match to us, at least Kalavango gave us a bit of match practice. We put a lot of effort in the two sets against Teletswana but the problem is when things get easy, you get too complacent," Ntshinogang told Mmegi Sport.

Having already qualified for the Zone VI Club Championships, the Mafolofolo tactician asserted that they came into the weekend's games to test whether they are ready for the regional games. But he hopes to get a clear picture when they meet their traditional rivals come December 9.

"I can't wait for the final. The whole essence is to check whether we're ready. The players are there, it's a matter of working on a number of systems," Ntshinogang said.

Credit has to go to Mafolofolo players, Josephine Ntshinogang and Kelebogile Mahupela for swinging the game in their favour when the odds were against them in the third set. After easily winning the opening two sets, complacency hit Mafolofolo and they were nearly punished by Teletswana. But the technical team responded well in time to win 25-23 in the thrilling last set. Teletswana coach, Luxe Mogapi, said that they lost to Mafolofolo due to stage fright. He said his players failed to respond to the demands of the game. Send us your comments about Mmegi newspaper Search For Old Newspaper Editions To advertise contact us through email
