Smooth sailing for BDP youth wing congress preparations

Preparations for the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) youth wing congress in Bobonong in July are progressing well, party executive secretary Dr. Batlang Serema has said. He expressed optimism that the congress would take place without hurdles due to the seemingly peaceful mood that the BDP is going through since the Tlokweng retreats.

The retreats have led to reconciliation gestures from the belligerents in both the Nkate-Merafhe and the Kedikilwe-Kwelagobe camps. "It is going to be an amicable congress and there will be no lobbying lists," said Serema. The youth wing is trying to recover from the gruelling factional fighting prior to and after the 2004 election of the current office headed by Peter Meswele. The elections came amidst heightened factionalism in the BDP. Though Meswele said he would not defend his seat due to age, he stated that the youth wing has been able to find peace and rise above factionalism. "We have been conducting seminars to iron out our differences. The youth have emphasised the need to work together and unite," he said. Meswele said they have realised that they lost too much time due to factional fighting. The man he defeated in 2004, Kefentse Mzwinila says he will be standing for the BDP youth chairmanship once more. Mzwinila enjoyed the sympathy of the Kedikilwe-Kwelagobe faction while Meswele had the blessing of the Nkate-Merafhe group. Reports say Isaac Maforaga is likely to challenge Mzwinila.
