Batshu said this when presenting a P1O 000 cheque to the Botswana Red Cross Society President, Dr Nomsa Mbere yesterday at the South Central Division Headquarters in Gaborone. The money was raised through an 80km sponsored walk in which members of the Botswana Police Service took part. The Commissioner said that though he could not make it since he was out of the country, he was overwhelmed by the positive response from members of the Police Service and the civilian staff. He further said that the Red Cross helps the needy and the disadvantaged through their theme "Botswana Red Cross - torch bearers illuminating the path towards 2016, with compassion and care for the vulnerable". The Police Service has an important role to play because human security in its complexity is a common denominator for the police and the Red Cross. Batshu said that the Botswana Police Service recognises that because of their socio-economic status, the disadvantaged were vulnerable to abuse of any kind hence the Botswana Police pledge for continued support to the Red Cross adding that the sponsored walk (Midnight Charity Walk) has instilled the spirit of giving and understanding that giving is also about support to make a difference in other people's lives. Receiving the cheque, Dr Mbere thanked the Botswana Police Service for their support. She said the invitation of the Police to participate in the walk was not for monetary gain but to focus on the security and safety of walkers. She concluded that the Botswana Red Cross Society is looking forward to continued support and partnership with the Botswana Police.
