Ousted mayor stops council meeting

LOBATSE: The Lobatse Town Council (LTC) adjourned its sitting twice yesterday because of legal proceedings launched by former deputy mayor, Tefo Pule.

The councillor successfully blocked the election of his successor as deputy mayor through a court order. Pule has moved to court to challenge his ouster as deputy mayor saying it is unlawful. Through his lawyer Joba Nnoi, he argues that the law makes no provision for the removal of a deputy mayor through a motion of no confidence. He is also challenging the voting rights of nominated councillors. LTC maintains that the election of the deputy mayor is an urgent matter and hence they called a special meeting for the purpose less than a week after Pule was ousted. Pule was removed from his seat at a full council meeting last Thursday. The meeting saw the dissolution of committees on the grounds that they were constituted when the Botswana National Front (BNF) was in control of the council. The leadership of the council has changed hands after BNF councillors defected to the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).
