Kokorwe's accuser pleads guilty

The Molepolole woman who recently reported to the police that film-maker Billy Kokorwe raped her has pleaded guilty to lying. Lesedi Ramathuba of Borakalalo Ward admitted the charge before Village Magistrate Mareledi Dipate yesterday.

She had previously denied the charge of lying to a police officer. She was put in the dock after withdrawing the rape charge she filed against Kokorwe. Ramathuba was first represented in the lying case by attorney Isaac Seloko and then by Themba Joina. She is accused of lying to the Police on February 2 during which she told them that Kokorwe raped her in Extension 9 in Gaborone. She later withdrew the charges and said that the sex was consensual. However, deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Phadi Solomon disputed the withdrawal saying rape is a serious offence that cannot be decided upon by an individual. She said it is up to the state to decide on what to do with the case after hearing all the evidence from witnesses. Kokorwe's lawyer representing Doreen Khama and Seloko for Ramathuba argued in previous court appearances that the state should not continue trying Kokorwe because there is no complainant. They said that Ramathuba is not forgiving or reconciling with Kokorwe because, "in her own words she says she was not raped". The case will continue on Friday when Solomon will be back from an official trip outside the country. Dipate is yet to deliver a ruling on whether or not Kokorwe should stand trial for rape.
