Acting principal roads engineer Ussia Lesetlhe said since January 17 this year, they have been conducting assessment of plots that would be affected. He says the assessment would be concluded by the end of this month. Residents of about 744 plots that will be partially affected by the envisaged infrastructure development would not be relocated. They would be compensated for the partial loss of land. Lesetlhe says the assessment will be followed by an evaluation process that would determine how much money would be paid to the affected people. "For sure by June this year, it will be all systems go. We hope everything pertaining to compensation and moving people to a new area will have been completed by then." Lesetlhe's statement will be received with excitement by the affected residents who have been hoping for a government windfall since the plan was announced years ago. The Old Naledi infrustructural development project was first announced four years ago and people have been wondering whether it would eventually take off. Some people were even thinking that perhaps the idea has been shelved for lack of funds following the retirement of the former town clerk, Margaret Mabua two years ago. Relocated residents would be settled just across the Old Lobatse Road near the Water Affairs headquarters. It is not yet clear what structures the government would put up for the relocated residents. But sources say building plans for such structures are being finalised and would be taken to the affected residents to sanction before construction starts.
