There was drama yesterday afternoon at the Broadhurst Industrial in Gaborone when gunmen robbed the Broadhurst branch of the First National Bank of Botswana (FNBB).

In a scene reminiscent of the American action movies, eyewitnesses said that robbers made away with a bag full of money after being involved in a shootout with the police. Eyewitnesses said that one security guard was wounded in the shootout. It is reported that the robbers took a customer hostage and used him as a shield. They threatened to shoot him if the police opened fire on them. The Broadhurst Police officers confirmed the incident but could not readily discuss what happened, saying it was still too early to comment. An officer at the station said, "It is still new. There is nothing we can say at this stage. But, there was an incident." Witnesses said the robbers escaped in a stallion car, which they later abandoned for a Nissan van. During the shootout the windows of the neighbouring Stanbic Bank were shattered by bullets, eyewitnesses said.
