Mascom Wireless yesterday donated P700,000 to UNICEF for the protection and support of orphans and vulnerable children. Mascom chief executive officer Jose Ferreira said that although the government and its partners has registered 53,200 orphans who receive material and psycho-social support, the reality is that there are still many who are not supported.

"We must make every effort to reach these children," he said. He said 56 percent of orphans live in households which are not economically active and more than 12 percent are under the age of nine and are living with HIV. He said this is a frightening situation for children in Botswana. Ferreira said that as part of their corporate responsibility, they have decided to be part of a programme supporting children affected by HIV/AIDS in the campaign 'Unite for children, unite against AIDS', which was launched last month. He said in 2006, they have a budget of more than P2.5 million for corporate social responsibility. Up to P1 million has been set aside for children affected by HIV/AIDS, part of which (P700,000) has been donated to UNICEF. He said they chose UNICEF, because of their knowledge about the conditions of children in the field and of their expertise. UNICEF Botswana Representative Gordon Jonathan Lewis said that last year, Mascom donated P62, 236 to support 100 marginalised orphans in the remote rural areas for basic food, health and pre-school.
