Two show interest in BNF Women's League presidency

The Botswana National Front (BNF) Women's League president Gagolepe Nthebolang is set to face a challenge from Gaborone politician Rhoda Sekgororoane.

The women elect their leaders during the party's conference in Lobatse next month and so far, only Sekgororoane and Nthebolang have indicated interest in the presidency. Nthebolang and his executive have been under fire with many critics complaining that the BNF women's wing is moribund and non-existent. Nthebolang acknowledges that the inactivity of the body has been a concern. "The failure of the organ should be seen as a collective failure of the committee which failed to pull together and make sure it consolidates its activities. After the committee stopped functioning, it became hard to run the organisation," she says. She mentions lack of funds as one of the reasons for the collapse of the women's wing. However she states that with a new team, she thinks she can turn around the organisation if she is re-elected. Meanwhile, Sekgororoane says that she is offering a different leadership that would propel the women's wing to the centre of BNF politics. "We cannot afford to have an organ as important as the BNF Women's League dying because alongside the Youth League, it should be the heart of the party where the regeneration is launched," she says. Once in power, she will make sure that women are conscientised about gender issues and ultimately use their numerical strength to vote as a block and bring pro-women changes in the party. "I want to make sure the 30percent commitment established as a party minimum for women's percentage in leadership positions is observed and fully implemented," explains Sekgororoane.
