Maforaga said that he has withdrawn because of personal reasons and the fact that he is taking up a position in the Vision 2016 Council to represent the youth. "I have informed my supporters throughout the country that I have stepped down," he explained. Speaking to Mmegi yesterday, Mzwinila said that once elected into the BDP youth leadership he is going to preach unity. He said that he is going to educate the youth to appreciate the party constitution and ensure that the youth structures are functional throughout the country. Under his leadership, he promised that the party youth as an organ of the BDP is going to take a position on national issues affecting the youth. It is his intention to ensure that youth representation is adequate. He cited issues like road accidents, HIV/AIDS and love-related violence as some of the issues that a proactive BDP youth wing would have to have position on. "Under my leadership, we are going to advocate for the ministry of sports and youth and call for poverty alleviation projects and general employment of the youth," Mzwinila said. One of his strategies will be to encourage the youth to take active leadership roles at the national level so that they could hone their general leadership skills. He said youth leadership at national level should comprise people that have dealt with BDP structures at the branches. "They must have demonstrated leadership capacity at branch level. This must be a criteria for determining if one has what it takes to lead the youth." It is the intention of his team to ensure that the BDP youth wing becomes a structure that is representative of all the party youth. He said they want to make the organisation as inclusive as possible. He said they have to go to the next elections an organised and disciplined lot. Mzwinila is aware that there are still people in the party that like factions and advised them that once they are united, they will continue getting good results. The 31-year-old Mmadinare-born politician is a psychologist, economist and an ex-soldier. He has forgiven current BDP youth president Peter Meswele and his group for walloping his camp in the troubled congress and elections in Kasane in 2004. Mzwinila and his allies protested the outcome on the basis that there were irregularities but in vain. After his painful loss in 2004, he faces the hurdle presented by 32-year-old Seloma who hails from Pilikwe in the Tswapong South constituency. Seloma regards himself as the best man for the job. "I think in terms of appreciation of the party structures and procedures, I am better placed to guide the youth," Seloma declared yesterday. Since he has worked with grassroots structures, he claims to have acquired the right leadership skills to steer the BDP youth wing. He doubts if Mzwinila really knows the needs of the people in the rural areas. Once elected he will ensure that the BDP youth famirialise themselves with the party constitution. He would take an active role in challenging the party leadership on national issues affecting the youth. "One of my first tasks is to condemn factionalism that has dogged the BDP for some time and ensure that the party structures are intact and perform well." Since the outgoing youth committee was not effective, Seloma will ensure that youth leaders go all out and make their presence felt. He said the BDP can continue to do well only when it has a vibrant youth wing. Seloma, who is a businessman in Gaborone said that since he has worked with grassroots structures of the BDP, he has a strong belief that he can change the fortunes of the party youth. "As the youth of a party in government, this is a stage at which we are in a way preparing ourselves to be future leaders of this country and we would like to keep our party in power as well," he asserted. Though factions are supposedly dead in the BDP, the youth elections will be fought along the lines of the political divide in the party namely the dominant Nkate-Merafhe group (A-Team) and the marginalised Kedikilwe-Kwelagobe camp (Barata phathi). Here is how the factions have lined up - A represents (A-team) and B represents Barata phathi. Mzwinila team is also known as pro-unity group. Unity list - Chairman Kefentse Mzwinila (B), vice chairman Kgotla Moahi (B), general secretary Haskins Nkayigwa (A), treasurer Kutlo Mokgosane (A), political officer Khumo Matiki (B), information officer Phillip Molobe (A) and fund raising Tshukela Mabuza (A). Additional members include Boiki Sibisibi (B), Gakologelwang Bethia (A), Tebogo Mokwena (B), Joseph Matseka (A) and Emmanuel Ntshanana (B). On the nominations, the A-team will have three while Barata phathi will have only two to make the line up 9-9 in a committee of 18 members. On the other hand, the pro-Seloma list is as follows: chairman Kitso Seloma, deputy chairman Moemedi Mokgachane, general secretary Dithapelo Tshotlego, treasurer Lady Pule, political officer Tumelo Kalaote, information officer Catherine Mosimanewakwena and fundraising Tidimalo Mothose. Additional members include Ineeleng Orman, Mmoedi Modiegi, Tshegofatso Matenge, Patricia Maguswi and Lesedi Chibua. This group is purely an A-team.
