Had I sat on my behind to wait for my "turn" to specialise, I would not be where I am. The ministry does absolutely nothing to aid those who decided to return to find placement for further education. Minister Tlou, I suggest you go to the basics of medical education. Education does not stop after graduation from medical school. If you have no undergraduate nor graduate school, how can you expect people wanting to do post graduate that is to sayspecialisation to return home yet? Doesn't the country need Neurosurgeons, Orthopaedic surgeons, Psychiatrists, Radiologists, Neurologists, Cardiologists, last but not least Pulmonologists personnel and plenty more? By the way, I thought it is government's intention to build a medical school! Medical school to be run by whom? Where is the foresight? Stop living in the laurels of being a third world and focus on what is really best for the future of health in Botswana. Minister Tlou, a lot of us have been touched by the loss of close relatives and friends. Be it AIDS or a simple misdiagnosis and mediocre intervention in our premier hospitals. Re batlela Batswana botsogo jo bo nametsang! It is an insult to think of us as not wanting to come home! As Batswana, we ask ourselves; "if a loved one goes into our premier hospital, what are the chances of them getting the correct treatment? We continue asking; how much does the Ministry of Health spend each year sending patients to South Africa for specialised treatment? What is the retention rate of those foreign specialists you bring into the country? How many Batswana has the ministry of health sent/helped to do specialised medical training? Why is there a discrepancy in remuneration between a local and a foreigner, be it doctor, nurse, pharmacist and so on? What are the requirements for a doctor to earn a private licence? What is the duration to process a licence for private practice? By the way, the process of doctors having to "take turns" for specialisation training is faulty. There are places where specialisation is free. Stop the Pull Him/Her Down that is PhD Syndrome and let those youngsters who seek specialisation to go for it. The country needs specialists, minister Tlou! Stop spreading malicious statements that Batswana doctors abroad are looking for excuses not to want to come home! Dr L.
