What was scheduled to be a local rap night only turned to be fun time for high spending Gaborone residents. Good performance or not, the crowd did not seem to care; all they came for was a spot to hang around for some fun. As the rappers spit rhymes, and kicked their legs in the air on stage, they seemed not to attract the attention of the crowd. No one seemed to pay attention to performances by local rappers, Apollo Diablo, Mr Doe, Oracle, and Qbio as they attempted to start the year with local rap jams.

The crowd seemed not to care about the performances, as they appeared happier with the DJ’s music. It was more like a continuation of the festive mood for Gaborone party animals as they kept their spending spree on course. They celebrated the first Friday of the New Year at La Frique, Molapo crossing in amazing fashion. Among many Batswana, it is common knowledge that January is the hardest month to survive in a year because people are dead broke. A drive around two of Gaborone’s popular entertainment spots on Friday proved otherwise.
At La Frique Pub and Restaurant, at Molapo Crossing, the atmosphere was reminiscent of a month-end fiesta. Stylishly dressed men and women jammed the pub. It was a busy night. The crowd started arriving in droves as early as 11pm. The people still have plenty of money to buy fuel and drinks. The crowd was mostly youthful and made up of people of different races. At some point, the queue to the pub, which is upstairs, was so packed raising fears of a stampede. Beer bottles thrown from the upper room summed up the mood of the evening of booze and fun. Outside the pub, hundreds of fun lovers could be seen loitering leisurely. Inside, the pub was congested and uncomfortable.
At Satchmos Jazz café, Friday night did not show any signs of a difficult month. It was business as usual as the resident band, the Jazz Men, and local jazz DJs, dazzled the impressive crowd with refreshing tunes. Outside the joint, people could be seen in the garden having a good time eating and drinking. Still in G-west, the Grand-West nightclub was also buzzing with revellers.
