Review tax regime - govt challenged
It is that time of year again - when Finance Minister Baledzi Gaolathe presents his fiscal budget for the upcoming financial year to the nation. The minister, as always, has the odds stacked against him at a time of declining economic fundamentals.

Salary increase a must – unions
Come Monday, the Minister of Finance and Development Planning Baledzi Gaolathe will be hot property. All eyes will be on him to set the tone on what to expect this year, when he presents his budget speech.

Rate of borrowing increased in December
The rate of borrowing from commercial banks for the month of December 2005 grew by 0.4 percent, but still fell below the targeted growth range, Bank of Botswana (BoB) has reported. “The growth remained below the lower end of the BoB credit growth target range for 2005 of 11-14 percent,” reported the Central Bank in its website.

No shadow budget for opposition
In Botswana, opposition political parties always come out - guns blazing - to criticise the budget speech soon after its presentation yet none of them ever prepare an alternative (shadow) budget, Mmegi has found out. “We have some people tasked with the responsibility of doing that but I have not heard from them up to now,” the spokesperson of the Botswana National Front (BNF), Moeti Mohwasa said on Wednesday.
