Setsiba received her award in Nairobi on Friday night. Her winning article on music fashion and AIDS was published in Mmegi. It examined the effects of the entertainment industry and the mass media in young minds. It said the mass media's depiction of sex as trendy sends a contradictory message to young people. The overall winner in the print category was Ralph Johnston of Kenya, with a story: "Hidden lives brought to life," published in Ecoforum Magazine. The story centred on young girls in Meru, Kenya turning to prostitution because they live in desperate poverty. The second prize was won by Elseborn Mwangi (Kenya) for his article: "Taking an HIV test is only the beginning of a long journey," published in the People Daily. The article discussed the crippling effects of HIV/AIDS on management. The awards were first held in 2003.
This year, only eight countries participated in the award and the chairman of the adjudication committee Nasser Ega-Musa decried the dominance of Kenyan journalists in radio and television categories and called on organisers to correct the disparity.
