Govt Arrogant On Basarwa - BNF

Botswana National Front (BNF) secretary-general Akanyang Magama says the government is acting in an arrogant and condescending manner towards Basarwa in the CKGR issue. Delivering a petition to the Director of Finance and Accounts Department in the Office of the President (OP) Otsile Garekwe, who received it for the president, Magama said the BNF opposed the relocation.

"The BNF rejects Government's simplistic view that indigenous people like Basarwa have only two options; either to remain locked up in an ancient lifestyle in game reserves and perish or relocate to remote places like New Xade and succumb to assimilation into the cultures of dominant ethnic groups," reads the petition. The relocation, as far as his party is concerned, was an example of the worst approach to development which neglected the cultural rights and dignity of the people for whom it is meant to be done. "There is a third and more viable development option, namely to modify the traditional lifestyles of Basarwa by judiciously and creatively combining the old and the new ways that maintain and enhance their cultural identity. This strategy must be pursued with their active participation at all levels," the petition states.

Speaking at the beginning of the demonstration at the Urban Freedom Square in White City, Motswakgakala Gaoberekwe, a Mosarwa rights activist, castigated the government for its violent treatment of the relocation victims. He pointed a finger at analysts and political pundits who, he says, are always quick to blame foreign influences whenever Basarwa call for their rights, stating that, Basarwa are human beings who are intelligent enough to wage their own struggle. "People should stop blaming foreigners for our protests. It is very patronising for people to assume that we are incapable of waging our own struggle without the input of so-called foreign elements," stated Gaoberekwe.

Elmon Tafa, BNF political education secretary, said the end of newsroom and boardroom politics are over, as his party will be launching mass demonstrations against the government on many issues affecting their core constituents of workers, minority groups and other marginalised groups.

"This demonstration is just the beginning," said Tafa. The demonstration involving hundreds of people and a motorcade started at White City and travelled through the city streets to the Office of President. Party leaders including president Otsweletse Moupo, Magama, Tafa, Ngwaketse West MP Mephato Reatile, deputy secretary-general Mohammed Khan and publicity secretary Moeti Mohwasa were also present. BNF in conjunction with Socialist International Botswana organised the event. Send us your comments about Mmegi newspaper Search For Old Newspaper Editions To advertise contact us through email
