The trial of businessman Borzo Parastaran on two counts of lying to a public officer starts at the Broadhurst Magistrate's Court today.

The case should have started yesterday but was postponed after a request by defence attorney Unoda Mack. The attorney said that he wanted to familiarise himself with the case because he is taking over from another lawyer. Parastaran, the director of Nina Property Management (Pty) Ltd is accused of lying to the Director of Lands so that he could be awarded a piece of state land for an English Medium School in Block 9. The state has since discovered that the company did not have the money at the time the application was made. The irregularities in the allocation of plot No. 26125 were revealed at the Lesetedi Land Commission in 2004. The commission was appointed following a successful motion in Parliament by Gaborone West South MP Robert Molefhabangwe. The commission probed the irregular allocation of state land in Gaborone.
