Kario Shoots From The Hip

Selebi Phikwe West Member of Parliament (MP) Kavis Kario yesterday dismissed Gaborone West North parliamentary candidate Otsweletse Moupo as a failure. Moupo, who is also president of the main opposition Botswana National Front (BNF) was beaten by Kario to the Selebi Phikwe West parliamentary seat in the past general elections.

The MP dismissed Moupo yesterday in Gaborone during the official launch of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Gaborone West North parliamentary candidate, Robert Masitara. The constituency remained without a representative after the death of the constituency MP, Paul Rantao.

Kario said it beats him why Gaborone residents seem to be accepting Moupo when residents of Selebi-Phikwe rejected him twice. He described Moupo as a perennial loser who wants to redeem his financial status by a parliamentary seat. Kario, who seemed to have a field day took issue with Moupo being called a lawyer.

“You always hear and read about lawyers. Have you ever heard of Moupo’s prowess in the court-room,” he asked rhetorically . Instead of giving an answer the crowd had a long laugh.

Kario said Moupo failed as an attorney and then tried his luck by being a deputy sheriff, a job which he said Moupo had little success in. He read the move from Selebi-Phikwe to Gaborone as a self-enriching project, saying the opposition man is seriously in the financial deep end. He said Moupo should not be voted to parliament because his track record as a leader cannot be traced.

On the other hand, guest of honour at the event, cabinet minister Jacob Nkate came to launch Masitara after first choice Daniel Kwelagobe baled in what is seen giving Masitara a cold shoulder.

Nkate seemed to have seized the occasion to sell his party at the expense of the person he had come to launch. He devoted much of the time talking about strides his party made and how the party is eager to address issues of poverty, unemployment and HIV/AIDS. After selling the party, he then went on to defend Masitara against the rape insinuations. He said his party does not abuse power as it allows the police to do their duty without interference. He added that the man should be treated as innocent until proven guilty. He took a swipe at those who read trouble in face of judicial pronouncement that Masitara has a case to answer in the case. He clarified that the statement implies that the alleged rapists would be allowed chance to state his side of the story.

Masitara, who only spoke for few minutes, promised wonders should he be elected to parliament. He said he is capable of providing, in three years, what has been lacking in the past 30 years.
