Khama fears BCP strength in Bobirwa

Vice President Ian Khama has warned that the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) might exploit the lack of development in Bobirwa North East to beat the Botswana Democratic Party (BCP) in a council by-election in the area. In a letter read during the burial of the late Bobirwa North East councillor, Tshidiso Seleke of the BDP in Gobajango, Khama urged the party faithfuls to vote wisely in the forthcoming by-election. He said the villages of Gobajango, Semolale and Mabole are still not developed, a factor, which BCP can capitalise on. He said the reports of factionalism in the BDP ranks in Bobirwa threatens its chances in the by-election.

Supporters of the party in the area are said to be divided between those aligned to area MP Shaw Kgathi and the man he beat in the BDP primaries, Victor Power Moupi. Speaking at the funeral, Kgathi said that people of Gobajango, Semolale and Mabole, should be left alone to vote their own candidate without external influence. “I will only get involved after you have voted a candidate of your own choice,” said Kgathi.

Gobajango chief, Keabetswe Mokgethi shocked mourners at the cemetery when he told them that: “leadership is vanishing and I don’t know who is going to lead you. If this death is by human design, I can only warn that fear God. I’m not the one saying these words, it’s God; there is no need to beat about the bush”.
