Debswana managing director Blackie Marole is to brief the Jwaneng Town Council on the relationship between its Jwanneg mine and sacked employees.

A councillor who preferred anonymity told Mmegi yesterday that the Jwaneng councillors called Marole to a meeting to communicate their grievances. The councillor said they want Debswana to put some things in the right direction regarding the relationship between the company and the mining workers’ union. “We also want the Debswana management to give independence to the Botswana Mining Workers’ Union (BMWU) which they are reported to be harassing.” He said the councillors were worried that if left unchecked, the company could become dictatorial.

Debswana attracted heavy criticism after it sacked 461 employees for engaging in a strike. Recently, there were reports suggesting that the company was interfering with BMWU operations. The company has denied the allegations and said it has mended fences with the union.

Debswana corporate communications manager, Kabelo Binns said the management visited the mine with other stakeholders yesterday to brief them on the latest developments. He said the council had also invited the company to their meeting and any party is free to communicate any grievances if they have any. He said the main objective of the visit to the mine was to share information on the developments, achievements and the way forward.
